We Already Have a Clean, Renewable Energy Resource

NYOHA-Bioheat-AdPost-x370w.jpgIn May, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) denied a water quality permit for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE), a natural gas pipeline that would threaten streams, wetlands, shellfish beds, marine life and other resources from Pennsylvania to the Rockaways.

Con Ed has since followed through on its threat to issue a moratorium on new gas service in New York City and Long Island, and pundits, editorial boards and gas industry lobbyists have spent the last few weeks ranting at the decision. After reminding the public that renewable electric generation is not anywhere near the capacity needed to meet demand, the pro-gas movement alleges that without NESE, homeowners and businesses will need to rely on “dirty heating oil.” This description, of course, is incorrect and misleading.
