Ten Easy Conservation Tips!

Here are ten easy ways to save energy and money all season long.

  1. Install a programmable thermostat. With this inexpensive device, you can automatically control the temperature when you are asleep or away from home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours a day from its normal setting.

  2. Schedule your periodic system maintenance before the heating season begins and reduce heating oil consumption by up to 10 percent.

  3. Add caulking and weather-stripping around doors, attic access, windows, outdoor faucets and any areas where there might be leaks. As much as 40 percent of a building’s energy costs can be attributed to air leaks.

  4. If you have a furnace, clean or replace the air filter once a month to assure the best airflow and efficiency.

  5. Keep ductwork in good repair by sealing leaks with mastic, metal-backed tape. Your home could be losing up to 25 percent of its heated or cooled air before it reaches the vents.

  6. Insulate your hot water tank. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that you insulate the tank or water heater and the first six feet of hot water pipe.

  7. Wrap your pipes to guard against heat loss and freezing.

  8. Install rubber gaskets behind outlets and switch plates on exterior walls. (Gaskets can be found in most home improvement stores.)

  9. Check the threshold for any gaps between the floor and doors; use a bottom seal that can be attached to the door to stop drafts.

  10. Remove air conditioning units from windows in the winter.
