FROM THE DESK OF...

ROCCO J. LACERTOSA

May 19, 2022

The “Electrify Everything Movement” is relentless in the quest to end the use of fossil fuels and flip the switch. The environmentalists believe it can be done in the short term and do not realize that the grid is not ready.

On May 3rd, I testified in-person in Brooklyn at the Climate Action Council’s public hearing.

It was a long day and I waited over four hours to give two minutes of testimony.

While I was a captive waiting to testify, I heard everything from the sublime to the ridiculous. However, surprisingly, I heard a handful of people who mentioned that we need to use more biofuels, so I felt a little more assured when it came my turn that I was not alone.

Among those testifying was the President of Local 638’s Steamfitters Union, Locals 101 and 1 of the Plumbers Union’s. All of whom mentioned biofuels. Encouraging.

In this edition, you can read my testimony before the Climate Action Council and my testimony before the New York State Assembly’s Committee on Energy on May 12th.

Also in this edition are the invitations for our member meeting on June 15th with the sponsorship opportunities and the Golf Outing on Monday July 18th also with sponsorship opportunities.

Registration for the member meeting was off to a slow start. The golf outing is beginning to pick up and we are at 35% of our sponsorship goal as of this writing.

I am confident that registrations for both events will pick up. Our April 13th meeting had over 50 people in attendance.

Sunday is the start of the Eastern Energy Expo, and I will be attending and hope to see many of you there.

Finally, stay safe and rest assured that your association is doing everything it can every day to fight those who want to see this industry gone.

The New York State Energy Coalition (NYSEC) is a trade association representing the independent retail and wholesale heating fuels and energy marketers in New York City and Nassau and Suffolk counties of New York State – comprising 70% of the state’s home heating oil market by volume. NYSEC members live and work in the neighborhoods they serve and are committed to improving the fuel products and appliances for their customers and their communities.

The Home Heating Liquid Fuel Industry Proposes Net-Zero Heating Fuel
NYSEC has embraced the Net-Zero Providence Resolution and we are committed to transforming the industry from supplying petroleum-based fuels to clean burning, non-fossil liquid renewables such as biodiesel and renewable diesel by 2050.

NYSEC supports the state’s climate change goals of carbon reduction including the phase-out of petroleum heating oil, but instead of using one choice of fuel for the home heating future – electricity – we support an all of the above approach to carbon reduction, that includes all fuels which can meet the states goals including biodiesel and renewable diesel – together known as biomass-based diesel.

I will reiterate, we are not against electrification for thermal heat, but believe there is more than one solution to a low carbon future.

Electricity Shortage Warnings Grow Across U.S.

By Katherine Blunt

From California to Texas to Indiana, electric-grid operators are warning that power-generating capacity is struggling to keep up with demand, a gap that could lead to rolling blackouts during heat waves or other peak periods as soon as this year.

California’s grid operator said Friday that it anticipates a shortfall in supplies this summer, especially if extreme heat, wildfires or delays in bringing new power sources online exacerbate the constraints. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO, which oversees a large regional grid spanning much of the Midwest, said late last month that capacity shortages may force it to take emergency measures to meet summer demand and flagged the risk of outages. In Texas, where a number of power plants lately went offline for maintenance, the grid operator warned of tight conditions during a heat wave expected to last into the next week.

New Technical Resource Center at NORA’s learning website

As technology changes and in-field challenges continue to occur, NORA has developed a technical resource center to assist our critical service professional in the field. This online resource provides service professionals accurate and easily accessible technical information.

NORA's new Technical Resource Center contains carefully selected instructional videos, technical bulletins and other resources to assist the liquid fuel technician when installing and maintaining their customer’s heating system.

“NORA intends this center to be the go-to place for technicians when additional instruction or information is needed. This is a living site that will be updated as new resources are identified,” according to NORA’s Director of Education, Robert O’Brien.

The posted resources are sourced from NORA generated materials, heating equipment manufacturers and other parties. Each item is carefully screened for accuracy and clarity.

Michael Devine, NORA President, stated that, “NORA and the industry owe it to homeowners to quickly solve heating system problems when they occur. We encourage companies and technicians to use this site for information on how to improve their skills, or when they are on a jobsite and need additional information.”

The NORA Technical Resource Center is located at Learning.NORAweb.org. NORA encourages technicians to bookmark this site on their mobile device or laptop used on the job.

The Future Of Liquid Fuels Technology Workshop At EEE

The National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) will be holding its 2022 Technology Workshop: The Future of Liquid Heating Fuels, at the Eastern Energy Expo (EEE), May 24 & 25 at Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT.

The Workshop, an annual event hosted by NORA, will present the latest in R&D on low carbon liquid fuels, heating equipment efficiency and new technologies, including a liquid-fuel fired heat pump. There will be special presentations from NORA's European partners regarding their achievements and challenges in transitioning to low carbon fuels.

The program will run Tuesday, May 24 and Wednesday, May 25. All attendees to the Eastern Energy Expo are welcome to attend. The sessions will be presented in a theater constructed right on EEE's Trade Show Floor.

Additionally, NORA will be showcasing a live-fire demonstration of biodiesel/heating oil blends, up to 100% biodiesel, on both days at the outdoor exhibit section at EEE. Watch as the fuel blends are ramped-up and the combustion process manages the increased blends.

With the Northeastern States' rapid adoption of carbon reduction laws and regulations, the work conducted by NORA is essential for the continued use of liquid fuels in home heating.

The NORA Workshop includes these topics:

Tuesday, May 24

Liquid Fuel R&D Accomplishments

Future Fuel R&D in Europe

B50 & B100 Field Trials

Best Kept Secret - Double Bottom Tanks

Tanks -Codes & Standards

SNEEC 2022 Reservations

The Southern New England Energy Conference welcomes new association co-sponsors the New York State Energy Coalition and the Empire State Energy Association, along with founding members: the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, the Energy Marketers Association of Rhode Island and the Massachusetts Energy Marketers Association.

With Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York all passing biofuel blending requirements, and with Massachusetts' blending incentives, it made sense for the two NY associations to join us at this year's SNEEC, which will focus on biofuels. Over half our sessions will deal with biofuel topics.
