FROM THE DESK OF...

ROCCO J. LACERTOSA

April 28, 2022

Last Wednesday NYSEC held its first in-person meeting of 2022, attended by nearly 60 people.

The original plan for speakers was to have Michael Devine attend to welcome him as NORA’s new president. Unfortunately, he was unable to make it. John Huber was scheduled to attend via ZOOM and while we were able to see him, we were unable to hear him…ah technology.

Tom Tubman gave an update on the latest from AEC. (See Below)

Finally, Rich Carrione presented the results of the Customer Attitudes toward Electrification Survey which was well received. The results can give us a guide to how we can reach customers and educate them further about the issues around having only one option where home heating is concerned. The survey is on our website, in the members section for those of you who are interested in reading it. (See Below)

A reminder that the final day that the Degree Day page will be populated is Saturday April 30th, 2022, and it will resume on October 1st. With April now for the most part behind us, it is time to think about the upcoming conference season.

In May we have the Eastern Energy Expo (information is in this newsletter and on our website).

The Southern New England Energy Conference returns in June (20th and 21st) in Newport, Rhode Island, at the Newport Marriott.

On Monday July 18th, NYSEC’s 2nd Annual Golf Classic will be held. Registration officially opens Monday May 2nd but companies have already begun signing up for sponsorships. (See Below)

September brings us the HEAT Show in Providence, Rhode Island.

It is going to be an active summer and I am looking forward to the events and being able to get together with people once again!

NYS Energy Coalition Headquartered In Hauppauge Supports United Way Of Long Island With A $5,000 Contribution

United Way of Long Island’s Project Warmth Fuel Fund Committee, a group of key representatives from the energy sector across Long Island including NYS Energy Coalition headquartered in Hauppauge, is at the forefront of helping to warm the homes and hearts of neighbors in temporary financial distress.

Due to the collective efforts of individuals and corporations, United Way was able to impact over 3,200 adults and children, including seniors and veterans in need of emergency heating assistance this winter season. Project Warmth Committee members have been especially generous, this includes a recent $5,000 contribution from NYS Energy Coalition.

As Long Island’s only island-wide non-governmental emergency heating fund, United Way’s Project Warmth is available as a safety net for individuals and families who are facing energy insecurity. Assistance with an oil delivery or heat-related utility bill means people have room in their budgets to cover essentials like food or medication.

R.W. Beckett and Sid Harvey's Offer 25% Matching AEC Contribution

(New York, April 2022) The American Energy Coalition (AEC) is pleased to announce that Sid Harvey's and R.W. Beckett have partnered to offer a challenge to their peers, customers and suppliers to contribute to the American Energy Coalition's (AEC) Spring Fundraising Campaign. Together, Beckett and Sid Harvey will match all contributions to the AEC Spring Fundraising Campaign with twenty-five cents on every dollar contributed.

The decision by Sid Harvey and Kevin Beckett challenges other Industry Stakeholders to also support the AEC efforts to promote the benefits of Oilheat and keep a check on the threats from the Environmental Lobby and State Legislative efforts to "cancel" our fuel.

This Matching Challenge has been hugely successful in prior years and has been used effectively by the AEC Investment Committee, co-chaired by Kevin Beckett and Bryan Coyne, as they engaged their Fundraising Campaigns. The Challenge has also benefited State Oilheat Associations who have seen their allocation of AEC Marketing Funds increase by 25% as they participated in the AEC Marketing Campaigns.

The Beckett and Sid Harvey match will apply to all donations received by the AEC beginning April 1 and running through June 30. The first $160,000 in contributions received will result in a total of $200,000 added to the AEC coffers to promote clean, efficient, friendly, oil-heat. The AEC thanks both organizations for their continued generosity, Industry Leadership, and especially their strong support for the AEC.

New threats to our Oilheat Industry have been introduced over the years, including the most recent "Electrification" effort, while traditional threats have remained including those from Gas Utilities that continue to aggressively pursue Oilheat Customers with false claims that promise cost savings and environmental benefits by converting to Natural Gas; claims that the AEC continues to refute through Radio Commercials, Bill Inserts, Data Sheets, E-Mail Blasts, Social Media Outreach and a robust, well-maintained Website: americanenergycoalition.org. The Sid Harvey / Beckett support, and the support of other Oilheat Industry Stakeholders, is critical to maintain this effort.

New Technical Resource Center at NORA’s learning website

As technology changes and in-field challenges continue to occur, NORA has developed a technical resource center to assist our critical service professional in the field. This online resource provides service professionals accurate and easily accessible technical information.

NORA's new Technical Resource Center contains carefully selected instructional videos, technical bulletins and other resources to assist the liquid fuel technician when installing and maintaining their customer’s heating system.

“NORA intends this center to be the go-to place for technicians when additional instruction or information is needed. This is a living site that will be updated as new resources are identified,” according to NORA’s Director of Education, Robert O’Brien.

The posted resources are sourced from NORA generated materials, heating equipment manufacturers and other parties. Each item is carefully screened for accuracy and clarity.

Michael Devine, NORA President, stated that, “NORA and the industry owe it to homeowners to quickly solve heating system problems when they occur. We encourage companies and technicians to use this site for information on how to improve their skills, or when they are on a jobsite and need additional information.”

The NORA Technical Resource Center is located at Learning.NORAweb.org. NORA encourages technicians to bookmark this site on their mobile device or laptop used on the job.

The Future Of Liquid Fuels Technology Workshop At EEE

The National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) will be holding its 2022 Technology Workshop: The Future of Liquid Heating Fuels, at the Eastern Energy Expo (EEE), May 24 & 25 at Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT.

The Workshop, an annual event hosted by NORA, will present the latest in R&D on low carbon liquid fuels, heating equipment efficiency and new technologies, including a liquid-fuel fired heat pump. There will be special presentations from NORA's European partners regarding their achievements and challenges in transitioning to low carbon fuels.

The program will run Tuesday, May 24 and Wednesday, May 25. All attendees to the Eastern Energy Expo are welcome to attend. The sessions will be presented in a theater constructed right on EEE's Trade Show Floor.

Additionally, NORA will be showcasing a live-fire demonstration of biodiesel/heating oil blends, up to 100% biodiesel, on both days at the outdoor exhibit section at EEE. Watch as the fuel blends are ramped-up and the combustion process manages the increased blends.

With the Northeastern States' rapid adoption of carbon reduction laws and regulations, the work conducted by NORA is essential for the continued use of liquid fuels in home heating.

The NORA Workshop includes these topics:

SNEEC 2022 Reservations

The Southern New England Energy Conference welcomes new association co-sponsors the New York State Energy Coalition and the Empire State Energy Association, along with founding members: the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association, the Energy Marketers Association of Rhode Island and the Massachusetts Energy Marketers Association.

With Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York all passing biofuel blending requirements, and with Massachusetts' blending incentives, it made sense for the two NY associations to join us at this year's SNEEC, which will focus on biofuels. Over half our sessions will deal with biofuel topics.
