NYC & LI Bioheat® Fuel Leads the Charge Against Climate Change
In June, NY state legislators passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Like the NYC Climate Mobilization Act passed earlier this year, the Climate Leadership Act offers an aggressive plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including a number of important benchmark dates. The big one is 2050. NYC plans to reduce buildings’ GHG emissions 80% by then, and the state is calling for 85% GHG reductions overall.
Going Greener
What you might not realize is that your building is already making great strides toward these goals, thanks to your heating system’s Bioheat® fuel. In New York City and on Long Island, all Bioheat fuel contains a minimum 5% clean, green biofuel made from renewable resources like soybean oil. The minimum biofuel amount is scheduled to increase to 10% by October 2025, 15% by 2030 and 20% by 2034. Policymakers say this increase will have the environmental impact equal to taking 175,000 cars off the road. This is obviously great news for all New Yorkers, but in fact, Bioheat fuel and its customers are going even further than that, and in some cases faster.
New Standards
In New York, we Bioheat fuel dealers are always looking for ways to help our customers reduce building emissions while improving your comfort. For example, our new industry standard calls for Bioheat fuel to contain 10% biofuel by 2023, 20% by 2025, and 50% by 2030. This would decrease our state’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 5.25 million metric tons, which would be the same as taking over 1.1 million cars off the road. By comparison, only 1.4 million households in NYC actually own a car. So, you can imagine how huge of a step forward this is for New Yorkers.
