Winter has been with us “officially” since December 21, but now it’s here in spirit, too. You probably realized that on January 7 when the first winter storm of 2017 dumped as much as 12 inches of snow on parts of Long Island during a day-long freeze-fest. Or during the three days after when even the daily high temperature in the New York area didn’t make it up to 32 degrees. Yes, these are the times you appreciate not only the covers you snuggle up under, but the local oil provider who helps keep your home and family warm.
NYSEC's Bioheat® fuel dealers are known for providing customers with a full range of services, from equipment sales and service to automatic fuel delivery. But even if you aren’t enrolled in a comprehensive service plan or a convenient auto delivery program, our members are still happy to serve you! If you need an emergency heating oil delivery or service on your heating system, your full-service dealer will keep the warmth flowing even while Old Man Winter tries to put the freeze on. Find the NYSEC member closest to you and give them a call.
If you’re a building owner or tenant, please be aware that by New York City law, the following home heating standards are in effect between October 31 and May 31:
- Between 10 PM and 6 AM, the inside temperature must be at least 55°F whenever the outside temperature falls below 40°F, and;
- Between 6 AM and 10 PM, the inside temperature must be at least 68°F whenever the outdoor temperature falls below 55°F.
Failure to adhere to these requirements can result in stiff penalties for landlords: $250-$500 dollars per day for each initial heat violation, and $500-$1,000 per day for each subsequent violation at the same building during the same and/or the next calendar year from the initial violation.
